Integrated live, work & play districts

The vision for Greater Downtown Red Deer, as expressed by citizens and approved by City Council, sees the development of multi-use districts where people can live, work and enjoy recreation and leisure activities in close proximity.  These urban environments are based on six themes:

Great Streets: Lively streets filled with people interacting amidst bustling stores, offices, shops, restaurants, public buildings and open spaces.  Our great streets will encourage multiple types of use, balancing the need for slow, safe vehicle movement with the many other non-vehicular uses.

Great Places: Buildings, outdoor spaces and informal spaces designed to enhance positive interaction among residents and visitors. Courtyards, plazas, fountains, flower gardens, and ice sculptures will all be part of the great spaces downtown.

Great Connections: Strong connections, through attractive natural and constructed corridors, to the Red Deer River, Waskasoo Creek and districts outside the core.

Vitality: As the living centre of our community, downtown is a place of innovation, ideas, exploration and creative progress.  It is alive and evolving.  Business thrives downtown.

Authenticity: Red Deer originated at its river crossings and the formal 'grid' of downtown streets. In our vision, authentic western and local innovations will continue to build on our historic origins.

Sustainability: With its existing infrastructure, downtown is inherently sustainable.  In the future, we aim for higher density and lower per-capita resource use downtown.
