Bistro On Gaetz (The)
category: Restaurants & Hospitality, Caf? & Lunch
Former City of Red Deer employee, Susan Malcolm, went from buying lattes to crafting those sweet, frothy beverages that coffee lovers everywhere fawn over. As a coffee aficionado herself, Susan has relished the idea of owning her own coffee shop for about 10 years. This dream was finally realized on June 20, 2011 when Susan bought the Bistro on Gaetz, located on little Gaetz Avenue in the hub of downtown, from previous owner, Candace Dunning. Susan is enthusiastic about her new business. “I wanted to open a nice, relaxing, appealing, independent coffee shop.” Susan also mentions that the Bistro was a combination of good timing and luck. “It was time to leave the City and it happened that Candace was selling her business at the same time that I was looking to buy a place. It was like fate.” The downtown location could not have made Susan happier. She wanted to keep her roots in Red Deer, as well as keep her eye on the downtown and its growth. She is energized about the Greater Downtown Action Plan and the Gaetz Avenue Revitalization plan. “Downtown is evolving and I want to be a part of it,” she says. Susan, daughter Jaime, and family friends Jessica and Nicole round out the friendly and comical staff. The Bistro’s atmosphere combined with the family-friendly, personable staff make this a great place for everything, from holding a business meeting to bringing your children, chatting with your girlfriends to studying for a final exam. After being open only a month, Susan has seen many of her former City co-workers and some existing customers come through the door. However, one particular customer comes to mind. “Joey has been coming to the Bistro for 7 years. He comes in at least once a day and is such as great guy.” The future holds many exciting opportunities for Susan and her Bistro. First off, she is extending her hours. She will be open Monday-Friday from 7:30am-6:00pm and Saturday from 8:30am-6:00pm. She is closed on Sundays. Susan will soon offer catering services for after hours and small group events. As well, the Bistro may soon become a musical and Internet hub with the possible addition of live music and free WiFi. “We are glad to join the downtown businesses. There are immense possibilities with this business,” Susan sums up. Final food for thought: Every coffee lover knows that the best coffee is downtown, so come down, grab a frothy latte, a fresh BLT, and a piece of homemade pie and immerse yourself in the eclectic mixture of sights, sounds and smells of this unique shop.
