The Soundhouse

After buying former music store, Records to the Rafters, local musicians and realtors, Davin Kemshead and Mike Williamson, renamed and reopened The Soundhouse in February 2010. “We didn’t want to see the store close and we felt there was a need for this music store to remain in the downtown,” says Davin, co-owner. The Soundhouse provides possibly the most diverse musical selection in Red Deer. From guitars and amplifiers, stomp boxes and strings, turntables and DJ gear to vinyl records and CDs, The Soundhouse will tickle the musical bone in anybody. Even diverse in its sounds, The Soundhouse carries everything: classical, blues, jazz, electronic, rock, metal, hip hop, and independent music. They also feature music from local artists.
The Soundhouse is located on Alexander Way (48 Street), and adds another flavour to the downtown. Davin notes that the downtown location is great because of “the proximity to transit, easily accessible. It made sense to keep it here. We could never run in it a mall.”
The Soundhouse is very unique and exhibits this uniqueness in a rare form: exceptional customer service. “We meet the needs of our customers – if we don’t have what a customer is looking for, we will track it down for them,” says Davin. Also, The Soundhouse provides an educational experience from picking a musical instrument that properly suits the needs of the customer to how to take care of and maintain instruments and equipment. For the loud or the shy musician, there is a soundproof booth located near the back of the store where you are able to try out different guitars and amplifiers before buying one.
The Soundhouse caters to a diverse clientele including music generalists, 9yr old newbies, casual listeners, record collectors and eclectic browsers. Davin mentions, “our customers are loyal and they have a broad range of musical talents and tastes.” To look after all of these customers is David Luchenski, a talented musician, DJ, and Soundhouse employee. Skilled in sound engineering and the technical side of the business, he helps customers with his expansive knowledge and customer service orientation.
The Soundhouse is offering a half price deal on vintage vinyl and 75% off used CDs. Also, they are participating in an event called Record Store Day in April 2012, where artists release a limited number of records to independent record stores for sale for only one day.
