Owners Kim and Tim Wright opened their store Wipe-Out Ski and Bike to provide an avenue for those who have a passion for riding and skiing. They opened on November 1, 2008 at 101 4918 46 Street, downtown Red Deer. Wipe-Out Ski and Bike carries high quality bikes, skis, snowboards, helmets, and accessories. In addition to sales, Wipe-Out services and repairs bicycles, snowboards and skis as well.
As avid cyclists and skiers, Kim and Tim decided that it was time to leave the oil field and pursue their passion in the city of their roots. “We want to share the enthusiasm we have for bikes and skis with the Red Deer area. I have grown up in Red Deer and I wanted to return to my childhood roots and provide the best quality of products and customer service here,” says Kim. When asked about their downtown location, Kim says that Wipe-Out is a destination store so it should be in downtown. Downtown was a big part of her childhood so opening her store in the city centre is nostalgic and a natural choice.
A chief reason that Kim wanted to open this store is because of her encounters with bad customer service and she has determined to provide each and every customer with a positive experience. Her customers broadly range from the “BMX-bike on the skate park” kids to the “leisure peddle around the trails” customers. Kim remembers many of her customers, but one in particular comes to mind. “There was a girl with cerebral palsy and her parents had bought her a bike. She was not confident on the bike and we made modifications to the peddles and the handlebars. The smile on her face afterwards was priceless.”
Wipe-Out has exciting things going on through the year. Every Monday night during the summer season, they host group rides where they explore the trails of Red Deer. Also, during Christmas, they put on a sale called the “Tricked Out Tinsel Tree Sale” where there is a large Christmas tree decorated with stockings and each stocking contains a discount. They are also involved in a winter show at the Westerner.
