Integrated Movement Study

The City of Red Deer has launched the Integrated Movement Study to look at how Red Deerians move in the city today, and how we want to move and live as we continue to grow. The City will engage residents, community groups and key stakeholders to understand what you think about bicycling, taking transit, walking and driving in the city today and how we plan for what will move us in the future.

Vital Signs Report Released

The Red Deer & District Community Foundation is pleased to present the 5th Vital Signs report in 2011. The Vital Signs report demonstrates the Foundation’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate of being a community catalyst. It is designed to engage the community by showing interesting and relevant data with the intention of sparking interesting conversations on issues that matter the most. This year, Red Deer’s greatest strengths have been identified as Green Spaces and Parks, Recreation, Sport and Active Living, and the economy. Its most important issues have been identified as crime, poverty and homelessness and human services and social programs.

Congratulations to Red Hat Award Winners

Tourism Red Deer’s Red Hat Awards Gala was held at the Black Knight Inn last night. The Red Hat Awards recognizes the unsung heros of the local hospitality and tourism industry. The Downtown Business Association is would like to congratulate our downtown winners, Toni Gardner-Johnston from O’Malley’s Irish Pub, who won in the server in a Lounge, Nightclub & Pub category, the Redstone Grill and Wine Bar's Lisa Pencer-Cook, who was recognized in the Customer Service Leadership category, and Melissa Carritt from The Bra Lounge in the Guest Services: Retail category.  Congratulations to three shining stars of downtown Red Deer!

Prairie Office Plus Celebrating 50th Anniversary

Prairie Office Plus will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary at their annual Customer Appreciation Day on Thursday October 27, from 10 am to 3 pm in their store at 5032 50th Avenue.

They will be hosting at least 13 vendors on site, displaying and speaking about their product lines and offering free samples.

Pastries, lunch, refreshments and desserts will be provided, and a “Cake Boss” style cake will be on site. The cake will be part of a special presentation at noon, celebrating Prairie Office’s 50th Anniversary in the downtown.
There will be many prizes to be given away, including an iPad2, iPod touch, a Nintendo Wii video game system and at least 50 other items. Their will be 2 ways to win, by spinning the wheel and/or use the key on the treasure chest.

Long Term Downtown Business Closing

After nearly 40 years of operation, Sue Yee, owner and operator of the Buffalo Restaurant, has decided to close the downtown establishment. We would like to wish Sue luck in her future endeavours, and express sadness at the loss of a The Buffalo Restaurant, one of the longest running businesses in downtown Red Deer.

Gaetz Avenue Revitalization Update

Happening This Week

- Tree planting and the planting bed are complete between 51 Street and Ross Street. Paving stones for the island portion of the sidewalk have arrived and this work will not require and road closures.
- The concrete curb and sidewalk on the west side of Gaetz between 49 Street and 48 Street should be finished by October 4. As soon as this work is complete, the contractor will start on the curb and sidewalks on the east side of the street.

Earthdance Red Deer Joins in Global Festival for Peace

On Saturday, September 24 at 5:00 PM, when Earthdance Red Deer takes a moment to share in the non-denominational prayer for peace, they will join with folks in Zurich, Switzerland (1:00 AM), Brisbane, Australia (9:00 AM), Santiago, Chile (7:00 PM) and dozens of other communities around the world in a simultaneous intention. 2011 marks the 14th annual Earthdance festival world wide, and Red Deer has participated since 2005. This global music and dance festival is a celebration of peace, social justice and environmental consciousness, and raises funds in each community for a local charity. Red Deer’s chosen organization this year is Art from the Streets.

Community Futures Small Business Learning Sessions

Community Futures is once again hosting a number of information sessions designed to help small business owners and employees succeed. Sessions range in price from $10 to $50 per person, and will cover a variety of topics including starting a business, sales and marketing, growing your business, and taxation. The first session will be held in late September, and sessions will continue through December.

Red Deer Bottling Small Business Award

Red Deer Bottling has funded a bursary for Central Albertan small businesses through Red Deer College.  The Red Deer Bottling Small Business Award is awarded to a Central Albertan business with 25 or fewer employees, and have not previously won the award.  The $5000 can be used towards tuition in courses offered through the Donald School of Business.  Courses may be taken at the RDC Main Campus, Donald School of Business or online courses.  Applications are being accepted until September 30, 2011.
