CentreFest Volunteers Needed!
Thursday, April 15th 2010

CentreFest is once again returning for its eighth year. As Central Alberta’s largest festival, with over 20 000 people attending last year, CentreFest absolutely could not function without its volunteers. We are looking for volunteers for both days, Saturday July 31st and Sunday August 1st, for a variety of positions, we have a task for any skill set.

1. Set Up & Take Down- We need a group of people who can assist in the set up of the site location, including directing vendors, and setting up tents and fixtures.

2. Volunteer Headquarters- Taking care of the needs of performers and fellow volunteers.

3. Information- including informing visitors of site attractions, and performances

4. Site Services- Anything and everything. Cleanup, maintenance, audio assistance, basically any help we need with the site itself.

5. Kids World- Helping at the fun interactive children’s area, including controlling and leading games, having a positive attitude, and most importantly, having fun.

We also have special opportunities for local not-for-profit organizations. Our 4 information booths have in the past been manned by not-for-profit groups, who can use the space to promote your organization and its events.

One of the most important responsibilities is to man the barricades that close off traffic to the streets. This position is essentially to ensure that no vehicles are gaining access to the CentreFest location. In the past, we have paired these positions with the site clean up group, and have had a local club or group take these positions. This is a great fundraising opportunity, as an honorarium has been set aside for the groups undertaking this extremely important role. All recycling proceeds will also be given to the group responsible for site clean up. In the past, this has been a great fund raiser for a number of clubs.

Anyone interested in volunteering as an individual or as a group, please contact the CentreFest Director, Randy Butler.

Street Sweeping To Begin Next Week
Thursday, April 8th 2010

An annual tradition, and sure fire sign of the beginning of spring is back...street sweeping. Street sweeping will begin, weather permitting, on Sunday, April 11, as sweepers head out to remove the remaining dirt and debris that has collected over winter.

The City of Red Deer is urging motorists to practice safety when driving near street sweepers. Jim Chase, City of Red Deer Roads Superintendent urges drivers to drive with caution, “The City recommends motorists leave at least three car lengths between their vehicle and a street sweeper. Keeping a safe distance can also prevent damage to vehicles from debris that might come from the street sweeper during the cleaning process. Also, do not enter lanes that are closed off and obey all construction and no parking signs.”

Another reminder for downtown businesses, is to sweep the sand and dirt from the sidewalk in front of your business prior to this Sunday. Sweeping of the downtown streets will begin once the arterial streets have been completed. Further street sweeping notices regarding sweeping in sub-divisions will be also be provided by the City of Red Deer Public Works department upon finalization of the schedule.
