Featured Vendors: Rosie's Place and Jenny's Delectables

Featured Vendors

Last week we had a chance to talk to two more of our seasonal vendors, Rosie's Place and Jenny's Delectables. Here is a summary of their interviews.

Rosie's Place

How did you start your business?

I went to the farmers market once and I saw what was lacking and what kinds of things I would enjoy, I’m a baker, I have my Red Seal in Pastry Chef, so this was something that I was obsessed with. I’m obsessed with Farmers Markets, my poor husband has to be dragged to every farmers market. I started it because I wanted to have pastry’s that were at a decent price for people and were also catered to people with allergies, which is something that I didn’t find, it was really difficult and I wanted to make that happen.

What kind of products do you sell?

I sell pies that are both Vegan and Gluten friendly, and we sell doughnuts and cookies. And we pretty much just stick to those three but there’s a lot of variety with that.

What is your “must try” product?

I personally love the doughnuts, people are trepidations about the doughnuts because they’re vegan and it’s a big thing for people to try them and they’re cloudy and fluffy and delicious, and they’re also made fresh, they’re made two to three hours prior to the market starting.

What make you unique?

We have products that cater to everybody, we cater to people who have allergies a who are just avoiding food and we have them at a reasonable price there’s no need to pay more, you either have a food allergy or a food preference.

What is your favourite thing to sell?

It would have to be the pies, I make a lot of different pies, I take lots of requests from customers, and it’s always so wonderful for people to say “Oh My Gosh! You have raisin pie, I haven’t seen that since I was a little girl, this brought back so many memories for me,” so I love being able to do those.

Can you find your product anywhere else?

You can find us at the Crossfield farmers market on Thursdays and at Sunrdre on Fridays, and online!

Do you attend any other markets?

Absolutely, we attend three markets, which is all done personally by me, so it’s a little tiring, but I love it and I’m excited to expand more.

How did you hear about the Downtown Red Deer Market?

From friends, other vendors, I said I was looking for another market to expand to and that would be nice and opening and they suggested the Downtown Market.

What is your favourite thing about being in Downtown Red Deer?

I love all the different kinds of people that are here. Ii like that people can get off work and come and grab their dinner, you know, come for a little snack. You have people who are lifetime market go-ers and people who just stumble upon it, and absolutely love it.

Jenny's Delectables

How did you start your business?

About 3 years ago, Jennifer lost her job in the oilfield and she didn’t really have anything in the go, so she made these potatoes one night and I said why don’t you go sell these in a farmers market. So she did! And when she went to sell them, she sold out in the first market she was in, and it just sort of escalated from there.

What kind of products do you sell?

Gourmet stuffed potatoes, crab stuffed mushroom caps, fully loaded potato skins, and now we have our line of perogies which also represents our potatoes, so same potato filling in our perogies.

What is your “must try” product?

The traditional - smoked bacon, chive, cheddar.

What make you unique?

As I understand it that there isn’t a lot  of competition in the field, It is a very hard business to grow, and to do the mass amount of volume that you have to do, it’s a lot of hard work, there’s not a lot of competition in this field at the volume we’re doing. between that and the unique recipe that Jennifer has to make these, they’re one of a kind.

What is your favourite thing to sell?

Personally, I don’t have one in particular. I like all the products; I like the newest product. Because every time we come out with a new product it creates that whole new excitements again. People really respond to new products.

Can you find your product anywhere else?

Yes! All of the Calgary CO-OP Locations, there’s 23, were in a total of 38 stores in Southern Alberta and two in Edmonton and at the end of the year were expanding into the Sobeys, Safeway’s and IGA’s.

Do you attend any other markets?

Yes, we attend a lot of markets! We attend up to 20 markets a week! From Red Deer, Saint Albert, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Calgary, all over the province and some in Saskatoon.

How did you hear about the Downtown Red Deer Market?

When we started, it was a market that came across our radar, and we went and tried it and it was a little gold mine - it was a gem - so we’ve been doing it ever since.

What is your favourite thing about being in Downtown Red Deer?

The atmosphere! It’s a great atmosphere and that’s what brings people to a market, great atmosphere and good vendors.
